- It was originated in association with the Hindu nationalist volunteer organisation, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS)
- The Jana Sangh’s first main movement, begun in the early year 1953, centred on a demand for the complete incorporation of Jammu and Kashmir into India.

- Following the rise of Hindu nationalism in India in the late 1990s, the party saw major electoral victories. Under the leadership of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the BJP-led coalition government came to power in 1999.
- The government lasted a full term but was defeated in elections in 2004.
- In the 2009 general election, the party suffered substantial losses and was reduced to to 116 seats in the Lok Sabha.
