Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC)

  • Bhabha Atomic Research Centre is the full form (name) of BARC:
  • Dr. Homi Jehangir Bhabha (also known as father of  Nuclear Program in India) founded the Nuclear Program in India. Dr Bhabha recognized the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) to conduct nuclear scientific research in the year 1945.
  • In January 1954, Dr. Bhabha initiated the Atomic Energy Establishment, Trombay (AEET) for a multidisciplinary research programme essential for India’s ambitious nuclear programme in order to increase the endeavour to use nuclear energy for the nation’s benefit.
  • Following Bhabha’s death in 1966, AEET was renamed Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC).

BARC is the innovator of R&D institutions such as

  • Its main facilities are located in Trombay (East Mumbai), with new facilities also situated in Challakere in Chitradurga district of Karnataka, India.
  • A new Special Mineral Enrichment Facility that focuses on the improvement of uranium (UO2) fuel is under creation in Atchutapuram near Visakhapatnam in the state Andhra Pradesh for support India’s nuclear submarine driver and produce high specific activity radioisotopes for extensive research.
  • BARC and its allied power generation centres received their first reactors from the west. The United States supplied India’s first power reactors, which were installed at the Tarapur Atomic Power Station.
