AAI: AIRPORTS AUTHORITY OF INDIA

  • It is a Miniratna – Category -1 Public Sector Enterprise of Govt. of India
  • The Govt. of India established the International Airports Authority of India (IAAI) in the year 1972 to manage the nation’s international airports. The National Airports Authority of India (NAAI) was established in the year 1986 to look after domestic airports.
  • The organizations were combined in April 1995 by an Act of Parliament, namely, the Airports Authority of India Act, in the year 1994 and has been instituted as a Statutory Body and was called as Airports Authority of India (AAI)

AAI manages around 137 airports, which include

  • 24 Nos. International Airports (including 3 International Civil Enclaves),
  • 10 Nos. Customs Airports (with 4 Customs Civil Enclaves),
  • 80 Nos. Domestic Airports
  • 23 Nos. Domestic Civil Enclaves at Defence airfields.
  • AIRPORTS AUTHORITY OF INDIA also delivers Air Traffic Management Services (ATMS) over the whole Indian Air Space and ground installations at all airports and 25 other places to ensure the safety of aircraft operations.
  • All major air-routes of Indian landmass are Radar enclosed (29 Radar installations at 11 locations) along with VOR/DVOR coverage (89 installations) co-located with Distance Measuring Equipment (DME) (90 installations).
  • 52 Nos. runways are provided with ILS installations including Night Landing Facilities at most of these Airports and Automatic Message Switching System at 15 Airports.
