FSSAI: Food Safety and Standards Authority of India

  • Former Union Minister Dr Anbumani Ramadoss founded the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) on 5 August 2008 under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, which was operationalized in 2006. A chairperson and 22 members make up the FSSAI.
  • The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India is a constitutional organisation under the Indian government’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
  • The FSSAI was recognized by the Food Safety and Standards Act of 2006, which is a consolidated act related to food safety and regulation in India.
  • The FSSAI is in charge of safeguarding and promoting public health by regulating and overseeing food safety.
  • It is led by a non-executive chairperson chosen by the Central Government who is currently or has previously held the office of Secretary to the Government of India.
  • FSSAI’s current chairperson is Rajesh Bhusan, and its current chief executive officer is Shri Arun Singhal (Year 2022).

The authority also has 6 regional offices

  2. Guwahati,
  3. Mumbai,
  4. Kolkata,
  5. Cochin, and
  6. Chennai.
  • The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has notified 14 referral laboratories, 72 state/UT laboratories across India, and 112 NABL approved commercial laboratories.

AIM:

  • In 2021, the FSSAI agreed to provide permanent licenses to restaurants and food manufacturers on the condition that they file their returns every year, in order to help industries involved in the manufacturing, handling, packing, and sale of food goods.
