The Bharatiya Jana Sangh, commonly known as the Jana Sangh, was created in 1951 by Syama Prasad Mukherjee in response to the policies of the ruling Congress party.
It was originated in association with the Hindu nationalist volunteer organisation, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS)
The Jana Sangh’s first main movement, begun in the early year 1953, centred on a demand for the complete incorporation of Jammu and Kashmir into India.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was formed in 1980 when two political parties, the Bharatiya Janata Sangh (BJS) and the Lok Dal (LD), merged (LD).
The BJS was a right-wing party founded in 1951, and the Lok Dal was a left-of-centre party founded in 1974.
Following the rise of Hindu nationalism in India in the late 1990s, the party saw major electoral victories. Under the leadership of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the BJP-led coalition government came to power in 1999.
The government lasted a full term but was defeated in elections in 2004.
In the 2009 general election, the party suffered substantial losses and was reduced to to 116 seats in the Lok Sabha.
The BJP made a comeback in the 2014 general election, winning 282 seats and forming the government under the leadership of Narendra Modi.
